Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is a unique, humanitarian program inspired by the desire to help solve the problems of elderly and handicapped people. Many people are able to live more independently in their homes with just a little outside help such as nourishing food from Meals on Wheels. Issues of shopping and cooking no longer present problems. Inability to prepare or provide your own meals is the only qualification for participation in the program. Meals are prepared and delivered from two sponsoring churches: Second Presbyterian and Trinity Baptist. The cost is $30 per week.

Meals on Wheels of Lexington began at Second Presbyterian Church in 1969. The unit serves about 70 meals every weekday (including holidays) year-round. Each day’s delivery includes a hot meal to be eaten immediately upon arrival and a bag of cold foods with a sandwich, salad, fruit, and desert to be refrigerated until eaten for supper. The delivery includes a brief friendly visit from a volunteer who delivers between 11 am and 1 pm.

Volunteers pack the meals between 8:30 and 11am each day.  Packers need a Food Handler’s Certificate obtained through the Health Department by watching a 45-minute training video and taking a short test. Cost is $25 and the Certificate is valid for three years. Drivers have their driver’s license and insurance on file with MOW.

If you would like to join the MOW team, call 859-252-5355 or stop by the kitchen from 8am-1pm any weekday.
