Earth Care Ministry

Second Presbyterian’s Earthcare Ministry accepts the responsibility to be good stewards of God’s creation.

“…God’s work in creation is too wonderful, too ancient, too beautiful, too good to be desecrated…Restoring creation is God’s own work in our time, in which God comes both to judge and to restore…”     —PC(USA) Environmental Policy

Sustainable Living & Earth Care Concerns is a part of the larger Presbyterian Hunger Program. Reducing and tempering the effects of global warming and maintaining the fertility and productivity of the earth is basic to combating hunger and creating a just and equitable world. As individual members of Second Presbyterian we strive to reuse, recycle, compost, buy local, go plastic free and keep learning about present day responsible stewardship.

In 2019 The Sunday School at Second Presbyterian collected caps and bottle lids which were recycled into two 4-foot benches; at the children’s direction one was placed in the children’s play area the other at Cardinal Valley School.

In 2020 and 2021 In collaboration with Canaan House a caps and lid collection drive was held with three more 4 foot benches to be placed at the 3 Canaan House residences. This project has been completed.

The 2018 PCUSA General Assembly voted to support carbon pricing legislation. There is a moral mandate for humanity to shift to a sustainable energy regime “and (the General Assembly) urged the implementation of “national and international policies that create a consistent, rational, and escalating price for emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, which will reduce consumption and support investment in sustainable alternative energy sources.” Information about carbon pricing can be found on the Citizens’ Climate Website.
