Meet Our Interim Pastor – Rev. Dr. Tom Groome!

Reverend Dr. Tom Groome is a lifelong Presbyterian and is currently the Head Pastor at First Presbyterian in Tupelo, MS.  He received his Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA in 1998 and his Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia in 2003. Tom was called to serve the Tupelo church in August 2006 after serving the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC for eight years. Tom is very active in the workings of the greater church. He has served on the Commission on Ministry for over 10 years and is past Moderator of that Commission for St. Andrew Presbytery as well as a member of the Committee on Ministry of the Foothills Presbytery in South Carolina.  He served a one year term as Moderator of St. Andrew Presbytery for 2013. He also recently attended the Interim Ministry Training.

Rev. Groome was raised in Vicksburg, MS and graduated from LSU in 1980 with a B.S. degree in Marketing, which is also where he met his wife, Leslie. They have three grown children; Rebecca, who is married to and lives in Temple City, CA, Thomas, who lives in Tupelo, and Anna who is married and lives in Augusta, GA with their two grandchildren. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with immediate and extended family, reading, and woodworking. Tom and Leslie look forward to meeting everyone at Second and getting to know the city of Lexington!

Malawi School Video Update

As part of the Capital Campaign in celebration of Second’s 200th Anniversary $31,625 has been designated to fund an addition to the Mngwangwa school in Malawi. Our liaison Robert Chirwa has recently received the below video update and along with the Mission Committee invites you to see how far the work has come.

Summer Adult Sunday School Classes

Below is the list of Adult Sunday School classes (9:40-10:40 a.m.).  Join us and bring a friend!

¨ Reformation Study (room 204) – This is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation – when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, GermanyJoin us as we learn more about our history and explore what this means for us today as part of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  We’ll use the new curriculum by Dr. Donald McKim, The Protestant Reformations.  Study books are $5.25. Contact Karen May (227-8200 or karen@the2mays.net) for details.

¨ The Present Word Bible Study (room 205) 

¨ Women’s Small Group Book Discussion Group (room 201A)

The Adult Education Fall Brochure will be available soon.  Look for new and existing classes to begin Sunday, September 10!
