Time & Talent Opportunities SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH What Do Volunteers Do?
INTRODUCTIONThis booklet is a companion piece to the Time & Talent Form and is laid out in the same order. Its object is to explain the workings of Second Presbyterian Church and to define the tasks that members can volunteer to do. The CHURCH COMMITTEES section concerns church leadership and gives a description of the duties of the committees. The other sections explain how to take part in the work of the church other than serving on a committee. First, there is the CHURCH PROGRAM section – worship, Christian education and fellowship. Then there is the important area of the CARING WITHIN. The day to day GENERAL OPERATION is described and then OUTREACH or mission to our community. The section called HANDICRAFTS can be used by any group in the church. The Presbytery Committees are not described here but your name will be given to the Presbytery to be considered when there is a vacancy. Second Presbyterian Church is governed by three boards: Trustees, Deacons and Session. The 19 member Board of Trustees is concerned with the insurance, maintenance, and use of the building, grounds and the church bus. Their term of office is 3 years beginning January 1st. The 25 member Board of Deacons is the caring arm of the church. They are concerned with the general well-being of the congregation and look after the sick and bereaved. Their term of office is 3 years beginning June 1st . The Session, made up of 22 Elders, oversees the program of the church. They have final say on budget, staff, and the overall program. Their work is carried on by 7 Session Committees as described in the next section. These committees are chaired by Elders but are made up of members-at-large as well as Deacon representatives. The Elders also serve a 3 year term beginning on June 1st. CHURCH COMMITTEESThe descriptions of the committees that oversee the work of the church are as follows: Christian Education Committee consists of Elders , Deacons, members of the congregation and staff members. Meets once a month, usually in the daytime. Sub-committees are: Adult Education recruits teachers for adult classes, selects topics and curriculum. Advent Workshop Coordinating Committee starts work in September planning 20 craft tables for persons of varying crafting abilities. The workshop takes place about the first Sunday of Advent from 3-5 for an afternoon of fun for the whole church family, followed by Youth sponsored Chili Cook-off. Campus Ministry make and send care packages to our college students during exam week, etc. They also sponsor gatherings of the students when they are home during holidays and summer. The gatherings can be Bible study, discussions or recreation. Meets when needed – less than monthly. Children’s Church School Council oversees and coordinates children/youth church school. They plan curriculum and multi-age activities that take place during the church school hour. They also recruit teachers and plan teacher appreciation events. Ecumenical Preschool is a cooperative effort of Second Presbyterian and Central Christian. They oversee advertising, budgeting, problem solving and teacher support. The committee includes members from each church and meets the last Monday of the month during the school year. Library Committee buy new books, catalogue, check in books, keep shelves in order. Need someone in the library on Sunday morning to help people find things, etc. They meet once a month in the library on a weekday. Nursery runs the nursery, making sure there are adequate supplies, ensures safety, oversees workers and volunteers providing care during regular church times and at special events. Open Arms Committee works to insure the integration of children and adults with special needs into every aspect of church (not only easy access to building but for blind, deaf and mental developmental needs.) (see Open Arms under Caring for our own.) Vacation Bible School Coordinating Committee chooses a program in January and meets monthly until VBS. VBS is held 4 nights in one week usually in June from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. - with dinner. For all ages. Youth Oversight Committee is made up of youth and adults who meet three to four times a year to plan and implement the youth program. Young Adults is based on the Young Adult Sunday school class, plans special activities for those who attend. Congregational Life Committee consists of 3 Elders, Deacon and sub-committee chairs and any interested church members. Meets quarterly with any necessary called meetings. The following sub-committees meet the eight months that the main committee doesn’t although meeting may vary according to sub-committee. Advertising/Inviting sees that congregational events are well publicized, that literature about Second Church is available and well-displayed, that a Website is in place and is updated and that Second Church has an inviting, welcoming and informative atmosphere. Archives preserves and makes available ministerial and congregational records, objects, and personal papers for the use of the church staff, scholars, and the general public. Includes oral histories, pastors’ portraits, offering Presbyterian History Tours, collecting and preserving newspaper articles, photographs, and audiovisual productions. Liturgical Arts involves sponsoring member art exhibits; offering opportunities for children and adults to participate in creating art for church use. Membership Care establishes personal contact with members and active visitors whose lack of attendance is of concern. Calls or writes absent members. Inquirers involves training three teams of four persons each to work with the pastoral staff in offering Inquirers’ Classes three times per year. Sub-committee members arrange three Inquirers’ dinners per year and look for ways to integrate new members into the life and ministry of Second Church. Welcoming Ministry working on designing new ways to identify, contact, welcome and encourage new visitors to become interested in and learn more about Second. Meets once a month during the day. Stephen Ministry recruits and provides training for new Stephen Leaders and Ministers, educates the congregation about Stephen Ministry, and coordinates activities with other Stephen Ministry congregations in our area. Time and Talent reviews and evaluates the use of the Time and Talent Report, helps committees identify volunteer opportunities, helps to define the work of the volunteers, connects volunteers with the persons or groups that can use their gifts, and identifies and enacts ways to show appreciation for, and encouragement of, volunteers. Mission Committee meets monthly. Each member of the Mission Committee belongs to one of three sub-committees – National/International, Regional and Local. Shortly after the beginning of the Mission Committee meeting they divide into the three sub-committees to discuss items in their areas. They then come back together to report and vote on recommendations. The group is responsible for the use of 20% of Second’s church budget. The committee is mostly a decision making, supervising body. It is a clearing house for information about the many activities, the body that responds to requests, advertises needs and service opportunities, informs the congregation about present and future activities, and organizes special collections and Minutes for Mission. International works with PCUSA missionaries, organizations such as CROP walk, Greater Gifts Craft Fair (SERRV) and Alternative Gift Fairs as well as international mission trips such as past ones to Honduras and Reynosa. Regional/National mostly guides our mission work in the state such as Buckhorn & Bellewood Children’s centers, Pikeville College, Morris Fork Crafts Fair, etc. Local guides the mission work within our facility such as Meals-on-Wheels, Best Friends (Alzheimer’s care group) as well as those within Fayette County such as God’s Pantry, Canaan House and Westminster Village. The volunteer opportunities for the many mission activities are listed in the outreach section. You do not need to be a member of a committee to take part in mission work. Fellowship Committee is responsible for bringing together members of the church for fellowship by sponsoring Sunday lunches, Wednesday night suppers, donut and coffee hour on Sunday mornings. Special events such as retreats are planned by this group - also small groups that meet for study and fellowship. These include Dinners for 8, Second Theater Group, sporting events (softball, golf etc.),bridge, Singles, discussion and Bible study groups which meet various mornings. The committee meets once a month. Finance Committee is responsible for recommending the budget to Session, oversight of the adopted budget and recommendations regarding reserves, income and expenditures and investment of Church funds. The committee is chaired by an Elder, has at least two Session members, one each from Deacons and Trustees, and at least two members from the congregation at large. The Business Manager and the Senior Pastor serve ex officio. They meet monthly or more often upon need and call. Music & Worship works with staff to see that worship services are well planned and implemented. This includes overseeing all music. They also oversee the care of the organ, the recording of the services, weddings, funerals, baptisms, ushers, and communion and work with other committees to plan special services. Usually meet the second Monday of the month. Stewardship Committee begins its work in early August and is finished by early December. During this time they meet about every two weeks for about an hour. The committee is in charge of raising the annual budget with activities like Second Sharing articles, Moment for Stewardship articles, letters to the congregation, Stewardship dinner and the phonation. Anyone interested would be welcomed. There are usually about 8 members. CHURCH PROGRAMAssisting in SanctuaryDecorate Sanctuary for Christmas takes about 8 man hours the week before the beginning of Advent. The wreaths and greens are hung and the candles are put in the windows. The outside wreaths are hung. The work is usually done during the day – lighting is better, custodial staff is there to help. Communion preparation and clean-up persons arrive at 8:00 for first service and 10:15 for second service. Cups around outer edge are filled with grape juice and the rest with wine. Bread is cut so minister can break the loaf. The preparer buys bread from Kroger or Great Harvest. The table is set according to a diagram on storage cabinet in the small kitchen across from library. Clean-up involves throwing away all elements not used (including cups), washing and filling trays with cups. Lay Readers are used to read scripture in the morning service. A copy of the scripture is sent to you when you have agreed to read on a certain date. Training available. Ushers 8:30 Service have captains that work one month, off two. They contact ushers about scheduling. Duties are to make sure everyone is welcomed and the offering is brought forward at correct time. Ushers 11:00 Service are organized into three teams each with a captain. Each team serves one month four times a year on a regular schedule. There are enough team members so a member can be absent if necessary. Duties involve greeting worshipers, distributing bulletins, helping find seats, answering questions and taking the collection. Some have been trained in CPR and the operation of the AED equipment. People with those skills are welcomed since medical emergencies do happen. The time required is from 10:30 to the end of the service. Funeral Ushers are called upon when a funeral is held in our sanctuary. Duties include directing people to the sanctuary or where to meet the family, distributing bulletins, assisting with seating and being available for emergencies. Time required is two hours. Special Services and EventsEvening Worship Service group helps plan and implement evening worship services. The following volunteers are needed: Worship Leaders - someone to read scripture or other material and generally help lead the service. Set-up and Clean-up prepare the room, take care of items used in the service, and clean up afterwards. Work with the minister planning the service. Band members and vocalists furnish the music. These people can be soloists or work together in a group. Guitars of various kinds, drums, synthesizers, etc. are needed. Work with minister planning the service. PowerPoint Coordinator PowerPoint presentations are often used and someone who can coordinate this work is necessary. Greeters welcome people as they arrive and hand out bulletins. Advent Workshop needs persons to help at the craft tables on the day of the workshop. (See Advent Workshop Coordinating Committee under Christian Education Committee for more information.) Wedding Coordinator Assistant oversees the movement of people – from dressing area to sanctuary, directing participants, seeing honored guests are seated, starting bridesmaids & bride down the aisle. In general, seeing that the wedding runs smoothly. Time required: 2 day period, approx. 1 hour at rehearsal and 1½ hours at wedding - usually Friday and Saturday. Alternative Gift Market is held in early December. Relief and development gifts such as trees, livestock, food or medicine to benefit the world’s poor and endangered planet. List of projects will appear in Second Sharing. Buyers select projects and receive appropriate cards to send as gifts. Volunteers collect the lists of projects and money, give cards and appropriate inserts to buyers. Market is usually open before and after church on several Sundays. Greater Gifts Craft Fair (formerly SERRV) needs people to take money for items sold. Other help is needed in unpacking and displaying items for sale. Generally held at the end of November several times on Wednesdays and Sundays. Planning church retreats needs people to plan for the two church-wide retreats during the year: Breakaway in February and a Fall Retreat in October. Planning special events includes such things as square dances, jazz program, Homer Ledford. Music and DramaChoirs rehearse Thursday night 7:00 to 8:00 for the Sanctuary Choir (8:30 service) and 7:30 to 9:00 for the Chancel Choir (11:00 service). Meeting August - May. Celtic Choir (summer choir) rehearses June-August on Sunday mornings at 8:00 and 10:25. No experience is required. Handbell Choir meets Wednesday nights 7:00 to 8:30. Participates in the 8:30 and 11:00 services. Anyone can join. Substitutes are always needed. Clarion Instrumental Ensemble consists of youth & young adult instrumentalists. Instruments of all types can join. Rehearses 2nd & 4th Saturdays 12:30 - 2:00 Children’s Choir is a part of the Wednesday night program. Meets 5:50-7:00. K - 2nd grade (Cherubs), 3rd - 5th grade (Seraphs). Meets September - April. Drama, Dance, Puppetry are used occasionally. Working with adultsChurch school teaching for adults has many facets. Studies may be of a book or a book of the Bible, a topic, a curriculum series such as the Young Adults or Adult Bible Study. A really short teaching term is the January term during which persons can choose a four week class on varied topics. Working with childrenSunday Nursery Substitute Very seldom needed. One of several people helping to care for children in nursery. Opening Celebration is a time for children to come together for ten minutes to sing and study the catechism. Then they go to graded classes. Church School Teaching Team Teaching consists of a three member team for each class. Two members of the team must be there each Sunday. There is a teacher orientation in August and then team planning however often the team wishes but at least once a semester. Short term teacher would be called for a short period of time, i.e. maternity leave. Substitute teachers would be called when someone knows he/she would be unable to teach. Standby sub is someone who for one Sunday per month checks each class to determine if the two required teachers are present and fill in if needed. Otherwise he/she would be free to attend their class. Summer church school is a multi-age curriculum event. All children come together for church school in the summer. Teachers may teach one or two Sundays for June-August. Worship Explorers is a Montessori based church worship service. Story tellers and greeters are need. There are always 2 teachers present. Can volunteer for just one Sunday or many. Vacation Bible School is held 4 nights in one week, usually in June, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. - with dinner. For all ages. People are needed to teach and assist in various capacities (crafts, refreshments, etc.). Faith and Fun is the Wednesday night program and takes place in the library. It is for children who do not want to participate in choir. Child may do homework, play board games, watch movies. Burnamwood Summer Camp needs regular summer camp counselors for elementary camp. The Youth Minister gives volunteer names to the camp director. Working with YouthChurch School and Summer Church School for youth is arranged the same as for children church school team teaching and summer church school. (above) Youth Groups have their own leaders but are always in need of adult volunteers for whatever they are doing. They often need transportation since the group is so large they all won’t fit on the church bus. The trips can be overnight, a day or a few hours. Sunday night youth have programs that consist of Hot Topics (Bible study), recreation and service to community and to the church; one each Sunday night of the month. Sunday night meals A volunteer is needed every Sunday night to prepare (cook or order) meals and setup/cleanup. They need to be there from 4:45 – 5:30. The church pays for the food and the volunteer can work alone or get help. Burnamwood Retreat (spring and fall) Volunteers go to the camp on Friday night with the youth and return home Sunday after lunch. Volunteers will co-lead small group with curriculum provided by camp director. Burnamwood Summer Camp needs regular summer camp counselors. The Youth Minister gives volunteer names to the camp director. Cambridge Place (nursing home) Youth go twice a month on Wednesday nights from 6 to 7 and play bingo with residents. Adults needed for extra transportation. Small GroupsBible Study At present three Bible study groups meet - Tuesday morning 10:30-12:00 (women’s group), Morning Psalms meeting each Thursday 10:00-11:00 and a group on Fridays (during school year) at 10:15 (mostly mothers of school age children). Men’s Breakfast meets each Wednesday 6:30-7:30 a.m. at Bob Evans on Richmond Road. Presbyterian Women – Circles draw women together for mission, Bible study and fellowship. There are three circles: Beth Wachs meets the second Sunday after church lunch, Candlelight meets the first Monday in the evening in homes, and Circle 1 meets the third Thursday at noon at church. All women are invited to visit with us and join our work. Second Seniors - the senior citizen group - meets the first Thursday for lunch and a program. They also take short trips to places of interest like the History Museum in Frankfort or several days trip like the recent one to Virginia. Singles meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays after lunch for Bible study and monthly for fellowship. Other special events are held. Small group discussion includes a woman’s group meeting on Saturday morning 9:00-10:00 to discuss a book. Other informal or ad hoc groups meet at members’ homes. Men’s Softball has two seasons – April-July at Athens field and September-October at Woodland Park. Minimum age is 18. Should be a member or an affiliate. Sports (other) The church is interested in what sports you like so events can be planned around them. Softball and the Golf Scramble are already established. Prospective MembersInquirers’ Class assistant meets with new people attending Inquirers’ Class, hands out materials and answers questions. Contact first-time visitors volunteers work one Sunday a month, or substitute. Reviews friendship pads after 11:00 service to find first-time visitors. Calls them if they have left a number, or write them if just an address. Tells staff pertinent information. Gathering Place hosts/hostesses mingle through the Gathering Place to be on the lookout for new faces or people by themselves, and extend a warm welcome to them. 9:30-9:55 or 10:30-10:55 Sundays. Food ServiceTable set-up/clean-up for church meals on Sundays, Wednesdays and other special times (Presbytery meetings, Lenten services, etc.) Setting tables - placemats, decorations (available in closet), salt & pepper. Help serve and then clean off tables, put away decorations, salt, etc. No cooking is involved. Collect money at meals from attendees, checking their names on the reservation list. Serve donuts & juice on Sunday morning consists of pouring juice, keeping donuts in order, taking money, talking to people, especially visitors. Puts the money in the safe. Hours - 9:20 until 11:00. Donuts, coffee, hot water is already set up. Juice is in station cabinet. Custodians clean up. Bake Cookies for receptions, etc. Cook/Provide – Deliver Meals is a wonderful way to reach out to members in need. You can provide and deliver the meal or just provide or just deliver the meal someone else provides. Prepare and deliver an entrée, salad/vegetable and dessert to a church member. These meals take into consideration the number of people to be served and medical conditions of the recipient. Meals have been delivered to families of new babies, families affected by a recent death, surgery or any emergency where the ministers feel a member would benefit from our service. CARING WITHINSupporting Each OtherBaptismal Sponsor is a tie to the church for the child. The sponsor is basically a mentor – sending birthday cards, writing notes, letting the child know there is someone in the church that cares for his spiritual life. Stephen Ministry Lay-persons help others who are going through a crisis or difficult period of life. 50 hours training – about I hour visit per week. There is a brochure by the church office explaining the Stephen Ministry. Visiting volunteers meet for instruction and are then assigned persons to visit. Prayer Chain is a group who prays for others. The office sends an email to the prayer chain leader who then sends an email to all members with prayer requests. If you don’t have email you will be called. Prayer Partners are assigned to one church school teacher to support the teacher by prayers. Open Arms needs persons that have experience with sign language, Braille, behavior management and special education or who will help families with respite care. Telephoning uses people to call members who may not have attended church recently, a friendly call to homebound or elderly and to find volunteers (from a list) to do specific tasks. Assist Parish NurseBlood pressure screening substitutes for the parish nurse for the Sunday morning blood pressure screening. Emergency child/adult care may be in your home or theirs. Care for child or adult if caregiver has emergency. Errands for homebound or emergency. Transportation is needed to bring non-drivers to church both services on Sunday morning, Wednesday evenings and other times special services are held. Drivers are also needed to take people to doctor’s appointments. The youth need extra transportation for their outings both on Wednesday and Sunday nights as well as overnight trips. GENERAL OPERATIONSOffice WorkStuff bulletins, envelopes uses persons every two weeks to prepare Second Sharing for mailing – 9:30 a.m. until done, about 1½ hours. When special mailings go out people are needed to get them ready. Always during office hours. Bulletins are stuffed on Fridays. Someone is needed especially during April & October. Substitutes are helpful. Telephone answering in the church office is very helpful for the staff. People are needed during office hours - particularly between 10:00 and 2:00. General MaintenanceRestocking Pews takes two people about an hour (a little more if special fund-raising envelopes are involved) anytime Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Straighten the hymnals, pick up trash, replace missing, dull or broken pencils, gather attendance sheets left in the tablets, take personal belongings to lost & found (or call the person if we can determine the owner), and take "These Days" money to Janet. Notify a custodian of special needs (broken hymnal rack, or special cleaning.) May need to notify the office if the hymnals are disappearing (sometimes the choir has them upstairs) or if we're running low on attendance sheets, pew envelopes etc. No dusting, washing or cleaning. Just straightening the area. Closet stocking/organizing, particularly the resource room and CE closet. Need straightening and checking to see when supplies are low. A person is needed to clean and put away costumes after Christmas. Minor household repairs, yard work, carpentry, furniture repair and painting are needed at the church and other places such as Canaan House, Quest Farm or our own homebound. Wash/care for church bus is a job for some persons who would take turns cleaning the outside and/or inside of the church bus to keep it attractive and ready for use. Audio-Visual TeamsChurch A/V technology team reviews A/V technology for church and makes recommendations for keeping technology up-to-date. Sanctuary A/V recording team is a two member team (a different team for each Sunday) responsible for operating both camera and audio equipment for the 11:00 service or other services that should be recorded. Forum/Fellowship Hall A/V equipment team needs persons to be on call to set up equipment and make sure it is working when needed in Forum or Fellowship Hall. Lighting Technician is needed to set up and operate lighting for special productions. Hosting EventsWhen Second hosts events involving non-members (Presbytery meetings, Lenten Lunches, B.U.I.L.D.) it is useful to have people to help with parking and guiding guests to meeting rooms in the church. BusinessStatistical analysis is needed on such things as patterns of attendance for visitors, church school, and other events. Marketing/public relations is for persons who wish to help with advertising and publicity but do not want to be on a committee. PresentationsDisplay case needs to be changed seasonally and to reflect up-coming events. Design/Graphics, Desktop Publishing and Writing are all needed for publications and brochures. Photography/video is used for special publications such as pictorial directory, Second Sharing and presentations at events such as stewardship dinners, retirement dinners, and anniversaries. Archives like to have records of services and events in the life of the church. PowerPoint presentations are very popular and a list of persons that would be interested in working with people in charge of programs and events would be very helpful. Publicity is important for the church members, and in some cases the public, so they will know about events and programs - especially if they are not the normal weekly events. Posters and other advertising media are necessary. Scrapbooks need to be made for special occasions such as retirement presentations. Proofreader for bulletins, Second Sharing, annual reports, etc. OUTREACHCommunityBest Friends Place needs people to be a friend to persons with dementia at church adult day center. Time may vary from 1 to 4 hours per week. Two 2-hour training sessions. Drop-in piano players needed Downtown Christian Unity Task Force (DCUTF) is an ecumenical, loose coalition of churches that together put on the Worship Exchange, sponsor the annual CROP walk, and host a biannual gathering of clergy, and participate in other projects from time to time. Decisions are made by a Board comprising representatives from each member congregation. Ecumenical Worship Exchange (DCUTF) takes place on the third Sunday in February. We need to host visitors from another congregation, or attend another church (designated by the sponsoring group, the Downtown Christian Unity Task Force) and (optional), following church, attend a social event held at one of the sponsoring churches (for all participants city wide.) Earth Care Ministries provides education and action related to the earth and its various systems, learning about the basis of our ministry in scripture, theology and Reformed heritage. Also provides information about how the earth systems work, what humans are doing to threaten the systems and what effective actions can be taken as individuals, the congregation and the community. The group meets as needed. Habitat for Humanity builds a home about every two years usually in partnership with another church. They frame, roof, install siding, doors and windows, insulate, paint, install kitchen cabinets and countertops plus cleaning, etc. They furnish their own tools, food, refreshments, etc. People are needed for construction and to supply food and refreshments. The work progresses at different rates over about a four week period. Shelter/Rehab serve dinners at: Hope Center – Every 3rd and 4th Mondays. Workers report to the Hope Center kitchen by 4:45 – only serve food – no prep or clean-up is needed. Serving line opens at 5:00 and closes at 6:00. Women’s Recovery Center – 3rd Sunday of March, June, Sept. & Dec. 3:00-6:00. Help prepare, serve meal & eat with residents. Canaan House, a residential facility designed to provide safe & affordable housing for persons with a mental illness. Volunteers have dinner once a month with residents and attend occasional events. B.U.I.L.D. Building a United Interfaith Lexington through Direct action is an ecumenical, faith-based, community organizing group that works to improve life for our citizens through research and direct action. Two levels of participation: Justice Ministry Team: Recruit and organize participants in our church. Three a Year: Attend the three big meetings each year, one in October and two in March. No other obligation. Westminster VillageProjects like Westminster Day held in August. Volunteers man booths, etc. Back-to-School Fair, Adopt a Family, collecting furniture and clothing are other projects. Tutors at Westminster Village help children with homework, play learning games, write stories, etc. Some crafts. 3:00-5:00 on Tuesday afternoons. Christian Service Ministry Board coordinates the social ministries at Westminster Village. Coordinates Christmas basket program. Meets every other month. Presbyterian Housing Corporation Board oversees the management of the properties (Westminster Village and Lakeside Manor) through a management company, reviews financial and vacancy reports, and approves capital expenditures and projects at the properties. PHC coordinates and monitors the relationship and interaction between Christian Service Ministries and the Properties. Meets every other month. Meals-on-WheelsMOW delivers a hot meal plus a bag containing a sandwich, juice, bread for toast, cereal, etc. (food for a whole day) to people who can benefit from this service. Meals are delivered Monday – Friday but volunteers generally work one day a week. Office Day Chairman – One day a week from 9:00-1:00. Answer door, phone, take messages. Keep clients and routing lists up-to-date. Help with packing, if necessary. Meets third Thursday every other month with MOW board at church at 12:30. Friday Chairman has more duties, including ordering food and preparing routing lists for the following week. One year commitment. Shoppers – One day a week. Shops for staples. Need man-woman team. (Boxes of juice are heavy.) Routers – drive routes occasionally to find best route order. Food Packers – Generally one day a week 9:00 -12:00. Prepares sandwiches and fills bags, puts hot meals into containers. Visitor/Driver – Generally one day a week 11:15 to 1:00. Delivers 10-16 meals. One person drives, one takes the meal to the door. Substitute Packers and Visitors/Drivers are needed. RefugeesRefugee families are sponsored by the church every several years. We do whatever is necessary to get them settled in Lexington – finding housing, getting utilities started, Social Security cards, jobs, children enrolled in school, temporary assistance with Food Stamps and Medicaid (if needed) and transportation to appointments and grocery. Letter WritingThis is an opportunity to write letters to support Bread for the World or other groups trying to make a difference in the world. The Mission Committee keeps in touch with our missionaries asking what they need and giving encouragement. Mission TripsTrips can be either National (Navaho Reservation), International (Mexico, Honduras), or Regional (West Virginia). Usually the group builds or repairs but it has done things like Vacation Bible School or gone as a fact-finding group. HANDICRAFTSArts & Crafts and NeedleworkOccasionally persons who have signed up under these categories are needed for special projects. These may be seldom used but it is very helpful to know who is available with these gifts. |
