Dr. William Augustus Jones, Jr.
Senior Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church,
Brooklyn, NY
The reverend Dr. William Augustus Jones, Jr., a native of
Lexington, Kentucky, is the son and grandson of Baptist ministers. Born
February 24, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky, he is a graduate of the
University of Kentucky, Crozer Theological Seminary and holds an earned
doctorate from Colgate Rochester Divinity School. He has done special
studies at the University of Lagos (Nigeria) and the University of Ghana
at Legon. A staunch Christian activist, he has for many years been a
leader in the struggle for human rights and economic justice.
Dr.
William Jones, Jr., has been pastor of Bethany Baptist Church,
NY, since September 1962. Bethany conducts a multi-faceted program
with a full time staff of 27 persons. Included in the outreach
ministries is a national radio and television ministry. |
A former president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention and
founder of the National Black Pastors' Conference, Dr. Jones has served as
a member of the General Council of the Baptist World Alliance. Dr. Jones
received the New York Urban League’s Frederick Douglas Award in 1972. He
has been cited as “The Dean of New York’s Great Preachers” by the New
York Daily News. He holds honorary doctorates from six colleges or
universities, including a Doctor of Humanities Degree from the University
of Kentucky, in 1993.
Dr. Jones has preached at conferences and churches around the world
including the Australian Pastors' Conference, The First All-Asian Baptist
Church Congress (Hyderabad, India), The Baptist World Congress (Keynote
Speaker - Toronto), and The International Congress on Preaching
(Edinburgh. Scotland).
He has served as visiting professor at various seminaries including
Princeton Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary. His
published writings include: The Black Church Looks at the Bicentennial,
God In The Ghetto, Responsible Preaching, The
African-American Church: Past, Present, and Future, and When God
Says, "Let Me Alone". He was a contributor to A Reader's
Companion to Crossing the Threshold of Hope, a Protestant response to
the Pastoral Writings of Pope John Paul II.
