Ronald P. Byars
Ronald
Preston Byars is
Professor
of Preaching and Worship at Union Seminary/PSCE in Richmond,
Virginia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of
Nebraska, a Master of Arts in History from Michigan State University, a
Master of Divinity from Yale University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from
Michigan State.
He was ordained in 1962 at his home church in Nebraska, and has served
as the pastor of churches in Fremont, Lansing, Detroit, and Birmingham,
Michigan, in addition to Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington.
With his extensive theological background and degrees in history at
both Master and Doctoral level, Dr. Byars is well equipped to apply
insights and knowledge from the history of the Protestant Church to the
support of those interested in crafting a strong future for
Presbyterianism. He has done just that in his latest book, The
Future of Protestant Worship: Beyond the Worship Wars, recently
published by Geneva Press.
Dr. Byars has published extensively. In addition to his most recent
book, he has authored Christian
Worship: Glorifying and Enjoying God, published in 2000, as well
as countless articles, sermons, and essays. He has served as columnist to
the periodicals, Reformed Liturgy and Music and The
Birmingham/Bloomfield Eccentric.
| Dr. Ronald Byars served as pastor of Second
Presbyterian Church from 1980 to 1993, and it was under his
leadership that the Church’s need for additional space was first
identified. Now that the new building is well under way, Dr.
Byars’ return as the 2002 Pace-Warren lecturer adds to the
atmosphere of congregational celebration. |
He is a consummate teacher, having taught courses for theological
students, clergy, and lay persons on topics as diverse as bible history
and alternative music for worship. The call for his services as a
lecturer, workshop leader, and shepherd of study tours has led him from
Montreat to Scotland; Taize, France; Geneva, Switzerland and Israel.
His talents as a pastor-theologian have received national recognition
from the The Calvin Institute on Worship, The General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the American Academy of Religion. Through
the frequent appointments, invitations, and commissions of these groups
and others, Dr. Byars makes a long lasting contribution to the preparation
of new pastors and to the future of the faith.

| A Conversation with Dr. Byars - 10/7/2002 |
Ron Byars is a wonderful pastor, scholar, and
preacher, and now an excellent professor at my alma mater, Union
Seminary in Virginia. I count myself fortunate to have been
Ron’s successor at Second, and to have had the opportunity in
the past seven years to have become his friend and colleague.

“In 1993,
Ron Byars was the pastor of Second Presbyterian Church and I took
my ideas for the establishment of the Pace-Warren Lecture Series
to him. His reaction was immediate and ecstatic. Now we have come
full circle; Ron Byars is returning to us as the 2002 Pace-Warren
featured speaker and I, in turn, am totally ecstatic at the
prospect.”
