Trip to Charleston and Savannah
October 24-28, 2007

We will be traveling by bus to Charleston and Savannah.

On the beach at Isle of PalmsWhile in Charleston, we will be staying at the Palms Hotel located on the beach. We will have a city tour and a boat tour out to Fort Sumter.

In Savannah by the riverWhile in Savannah, we will also take a city tour, visit the Savannah History Museum and Owens-Thomas House. We will eat at the Lady and Sons, which is the restaurant of Paula Dean who is frequently featured on the Food Channel.

Kirking of the TartansOn Sunday, October 28, we will be attending church at First Presbyterian in Spartanburg, SC where the very traditional Kirking of the Tartans will be celebrated for Reformation Sunday. We will arrive back at Second in the early evening.

The Second Seniors invited all who were interested to join them on their trip through the Smokies to Asheville, NC for the annual Festival of Flowers at the Biltmore Estates.

Cost: $325 per person double occupancy; $400 single occupancy.
This price included bus, accommodations, 7 meals, and entrance fees to all sites.

Biltmore Flower Garden    The Itinerary included:
A visit to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian,
A tour of the Thomas Wolfe State Historical Site,
One day at Biltmore Estates,

Marvin Bartlett, News Anchor for Fox 56, will speak on his experience with Jarrett Mynear, the little boy who began the "Joy Cart" program at U.K’s Children’s Hospital. Linda Kuder illustrates her South American AdventureJarrett died of cancer in 2002. Marvin has written a book about Jarrett’s battle with the disease and will bring some of his books which can be purchased. Proceeds go the Joy Cart Program. Those who attend the luncheon are asked to bring a toy suitable for a child in a hospital bed or wheelchair. If you are unable to come to lunch, you can still donate a toy. Look for the donation box in The Gathering Place. The luncheon is open to all who wish to attend!

Lunch at 12:30 in church dining room following by a trip to the Louisville Slugger Museum (the home of the "tallest bat"). We'll leave, via church bus, at 1:30 p.m. The 90 minute tour cost $4/person and includes a film, some exhibits, and a tour of the factory. The museum is wheelchair accessible. We should return to the church around 5:30 p.m.
 
Abbey of GethsemaniFriday, April 27:
Lunch near Bardstown and visit to Abbey of Gethsemani. The Abbey of Gethsemani is the largest and oldest Order of Cistercian Monks in the U.S. Founded in 1848, the Trappist monastery was home to the writer Thomas Merton, and is known today for its delicious cheeses and fruitcakes. We will attend their afternoon prayer service and view a video about the abbey, then take a self-guided tour.

Trip to the Kentucky Reptile Zoo in Slade, Kentucky, followed by lunch at Natural Bridge State Resort Park. The reptile zoo houses 100 species of snakes and over 700 animals. Our group will see the process of venom extraction as part of our visit to the reptile zoo! The cost for the zoo is $5.00 per person. Lunch at the park will cost around $7.00 per person. We will meet at the church at 10:00 a.m. to board the church bus and return to the church around 2:30 p.m.. This trip is limited to 15 people.

Join us for lunch and a trip to the “Holy Fairs” at Cane Ridge, Kentucky. We’ll leave from the church via the church bus at 10:30 a.m. and return around 5:00 p.m. First stop will be lunch at Blue Lick State Resort Park, then we will drive to Cane Ridge to join part in the special activities of the “200th Anniversary of the Great Revival”. We’ll walk around, visit special exhibits, hear gospel music, see dramas and impersonations, and learn lots! At 3:00 p.m., we’ll participate in a special worship service featuring a 200 voice choir. The only cost will be for lunch ($6-8).

McConnell SpringsApril 2, 1998 - City council member, Isabelle Yates, was our guest at Lunch at the Church. Her topic was McConnell Springs, birthplace of Lexington. Isabelle Yates was a central force in the reclamation of McConnell Springs area and chairs the Board of Directors of the Friends of McConnell Springs. A follow up "field trip" to McConnell Springs will be held later.

April 23, 1998 - Trip to the Cincinnati Flower Show. We had a bus to pick us up and had our own tour director for an all day trip. Cost: $50 per person, and including admission to the flower show.

May 28, 1998 - Tour of the Toyota Plant in Georgetown. We carpooled to Georgetown for the 2 o'clock tour. Con Steiner made arrangements for this trip.

U.K.LibraryJune 4, 1998 - Lunch at the Church plus Fellowship, followed by a tour of the new U.K. Library.

June 25, 1998 - A "Historic Tour" of the Lexington Cemetery with Jim Combs.

Homer LedfordJune 30, 1998 - Visit with musician and craftsman, Homer Ledford, at his workshop in Winchester. We met in the dining room at 6:30 p.m. and then carpooled to Mr. Ledford's workshop.

August 6, 1998 - Lunch at noon followed by guest speakers Ruth Berry and Sam Pendergrast about their mission trip to Honduras earlier this summer.

September 3, 1998 - Lunch at noon followed by guest speaker, Maureen McDorman, who spoke about "This Changing World."
