GLOBAL MISSION

Many community service agencies use our building for meetings and events.

From our annual budget, approximately one-fourth of our funds go to mission related activities, including projects in our local community as well as those supported throughout the world by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and other mission agencies. Special offerings throughout the year enable members to contribute to causes such as disaster relief, Presbyterian related colleges for minorities, and children’s homes. Associate Pastor, Sam Pendergrast has particular responsibility for the mission program of Second Church.

Did you know there was a Presbyterian version of the "Peace Corps"?

Are you inspired by Second's mission trips to Arizona and Honduras? Are you wondering if there is an opportunity for you to serve for more than just a few days?

Presbyterian Young Adult Volunteer Progams (YAVs) are working and learning in Ghana, the Philippines, Northern Ireland, Britain, the Mexican Border, Argentina, Kenya, and Guatemala. Most are recent college graduates who feel a call to serve in the work of the church. They work in community development, programs for youth or elderly, street people, as teachers or helpers in various institutions. They live in simple mud huts in Ghana and small apartments in Belfast. They go in groups for one year to each country join with some of the neediest people in the world, and seek to become servants who walk in faith with Christ, seeking peace, healing, reconciliation and justice.

The YAV program is now in its 5th year, with about 55 volunteers going out at the end of each summer. The PCUSA's goal is to have up to 250 volunteers working by 2001.

See Sam for more information.

PC(USA) International Travel/Study Seminars

Learning as Service - Involvement in Global Mission

The Presbyterian Church's Global Mission Office offers many travel/study trips each year which challenge and extend our faith perspective beyond boundaries of race, class, culture and nationality. Participants have the opportunity to share a common faith and build international partnerships in ministry. The goal of all these trips is both personal transformation and strengthening one another in mission.

Costs per trip range from $2,400 to $3,400.
