| Dear Friends
Joe and I just received notice from PC-USA of your generous gift to our ministry here in Haiti this year. We want you to know how much we appreciate you. This is an encouragement to us, as we know we are not here in Haiti without the support of many loving Christians. Many people have asked how we fared with Hurricane "George". We had lots of rain. The hospital was not damaged by George, but many communities in the area were flooded and are now suffering. We've delivered tons of water to these communities. This becomes heart breaking to watch the suffering - crops destroyed, houses full of mud, no potable water, no food - it goes on and on. The two greatest needs are for water and food. We are working with several agencies in the country to help us with both food and water. Each night we had volunteers here to help fill bags of food to take to the damaged areas. Electricity was finally restored in our area. Before this we were running the hospital's generators full time, which was quite expensive. As you can imagine, delivery of food can be a great temptation, so we asked for help from the police. I've personally watched people fight for little bags of culligan water, and imagined the fight for food was worse. Most of the crops will take a year to yield. Dr. Lafontant, the hospital director, is a tremendous leader, but we need 10 of him! We continue to be thankful for all the churches and organizations that are helping us to serve the poor in the name of Jesus Christ here in the Léogane area. With love, Linda Markee |
