CHRISTIAN EDUCATIONFROM OUR DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION . . . Greetings! One of my favorite children's stories is The Treasure by Uri Shulevitz. The story tells about a poor man named Isaac who dreams of a great treasure hidden in a city far away. After several attempts to turn over in his sleep and ignore his dreams, Isaac gets out of bed and makes the long journey to the city far away. However, at his journey's end, instead of finding the treasure, Isaac finds another "dreamer." After Isaac tells about his journey and his dream, the other laughs, and says, "You wore out your shoes for nothing! If I believed my dream, I would travel to your hometown and search for a treasure hidden under the stove of a man named Isaac." Needless to say, Isaac returns home and, you guessed it, finds a treasure under the stove in his own house. What I love about this story is that it has so much to say in a simple way (like many of the Bible stories we love). Every time I read it I am reminded to believe in dreams, to risk making journeys, and to consider the possibilities that we might have a hidden treasure in our own house. As Christian people, we do have a great treasure in our own house. First off, of course, the Church has a treasure in the love God has poured out on us. We also have a treasure in the stories, letters, and challenges given to us in the Bible, in the Holy Spirit given to us, and in the mission given to us as God's people. We have the grand story of God's love for us that gives meaning and direction to our lives. As people who are "Second Church," we also have a treasure in our own house. We have been given many gifts. Some of these gifts are in the many people who find joy in sharing and teaching and who are being led to give a great deal of themselves. We have great opportunities to learn and grow together and we have work that God has set before us. Please take the opportunity to dig around a little and explore some of the treasure in our own house. Take a look at the schedule of classes we have for Sunday mornings. Join us on Wednesday nights during the school year for some new children's programs and some great-sounding studies for adults as well!
