MISSION ~ SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Downtown Christian Unity Task Force

This multi-racial coalition works to foster cooperation between downtown churches and to promote reconciliation between racial and social groups. We are involved in their annual Downtown Bible School each summer. The DCUTF also sponsors an annual CROP Walk, which raises money for the relief work of Church World Service, and for local work at God's Pantry. Members of Second Church regularly support and participate in the CROP Walk.

The DCUTF churches are: Calvary Baptist, Central Christian, East Second St. Christian, First United Methodist, Historic Pleasant Green Baptist, Maxwell St. Presbyterian, Salvation Army, St. Paul A.M.E., St. Peter Catholic, St Peter Claver Catholic, Second Presbyterian, First Presbyterian, Christ Church Cathedral, Good Shepherd Episcopal, Hunter Presbyterian, Cathedral Christ the King Catholic, St. Paul Catholic, Shiloh Baptist, and Faith Lutheran.

Better Race Relations

Talk about race is commonplace, but the kind of talk that will help us to solve our problems together is not. For real communication to take place, people from all races and ethnic groups need to feel comfortable expressing their thoughts. This requires a process that encourages honest, respectful communication.

The Race Relations Dialogues program of the DCUTF has developed a program that brings people together that gets to the heart of race relations. Several times a year sponsored groups meet for 5 consecutive weeks to discover that we “can all get along.”

Second Church has been the site for several groups, and many participants have come from our Church. If you’re interested in knowing more call AliceAnn Sanders at 223-7669 or Bobbie Brown at 272-1985.

Bluegrass Aspendale Vacation Bible School

Second Church is once again participating in the Downtown Christian Unity Task Force's effort to provide a week of Vacation Bible School for the children of Bluegrass Aspendale. On Monday, July 6, 1998, members of our congregation will work with members from Christ Church, First United Methodist, and St. Paul A.M.E. to show the children (throughout the story of Joseph and his brothers) that God helps us to be kind.
